Visitors to downtown Schenectady who show up on two wheels—instead of two feet or four wheels—now have a place to park their bicycles.
Bike storage racks have been installed at five downtown parking lots by the Metroplex Development Authority.
The racks, which are available free of charge and located next to booths staffed by parking attendants, can accommodate more than a dozen bicycles each. The city of Schenectady provided the bike racks to the Metroplex at no cost.
“As more people work downtown or visit downtown for its many shops and entertainment options, we wanted to make it easy for residents and visitors to commute by bicycle,” Metroplex Chairman Ray Gillen said.
The racks are at the following parking lots: Clinton South behind Proctors; Clinton North near Jay Street; Center City; Broadway North near Pinhead Susan’s; State/Erie next to the Amtrak station.
The racks have been installed at a time when bike trails are being expanded in the county. The projects include a new trail linking upper Union Street, Central Park, Vale Park and downtown. The state provided a $628,000 grant toward design and construction of the trail, which is expected to be ready next year.
