When the table’s cleared and the leftovers are put away, pack up the family and GO FOR A HIKE – or just stroll around a local park. No matter where you roam, these ideas can give your trek a fresh twist.
1. COLOR WALK
Take along sample paint chips (paper strips with colors from the paint store) or crayons and let the kids scavenger hunt items from nature that match the colors. Make-up new color names of your own, that correspond to the found objects, such as Acorn Brown of Pebble Grey.
2. EGG CARTON WALK
Give each child an empty egg carton to carry. In the bottom of each egg cup, write a descriptive word, such as “hard,” “smooth,” or “rough.” Ask the kids to fill their cartons with small items that fit the description. At home, compare eyeryone’s finds.
3.MONOGRAM WALK
Ask each member of your group to spot, listen for, touch, or smell as many objects as they can that begin with the initial of their first name. (i.e. Rich would find rocks with the R.) During or after your walk, share what you found.
