Work on Elmira’s Lackawanna Trail may soon get underway. Elmira City Council will vote Monday night to request an extension to the construction being done to the trail.
The city plans to finish the asphalt trail, which runs from East Water Street to Eldridge Park for bicyclists, walkers and rollerbladers.
Federal funding for the project runs out at the end of the year. But the plans weren’t approved by the Department of Transportation until September, leaving little time for construction.
“Especially on the heels of the three major storms we had this year, in April, May and the one right in September. We were just too far behind to do the work. So we asked the DOT for an extension, which they’re in support of, understanding the circumstances. We would do that work in spring of next year,” said Elmira DPW Director Andy Avery.
The project is 60 percent federally funded. It costs around $400,000.
