A popular cross-country ski center in the Adirondacks has been sold in bankruptcy court and the new owner says he plans to open the touring trails as soon as there is enough snow. “I am now the owner of Garnet Hill,” Donald Preuninger said of the touring center, restaurant and lodge located in North River, Warren County.
Preuninger, through his company, Pine Meadows Property LLC, closed on the 268-acre ski center late last week after a bankruptcy judge approved the $1.2 million sale.
The property’s former co-owner, Mary Donnellan Fahy, filed for bankruptcy protection as it was losing money. Creditors included the lender TD Banknorth, which had more than $800,000 outstanding, according to previous reports.
Fahy and Joseph Fahy had also been in the midst of a divorce. Joseph Fahy had moved to stop the bankruptcy sale but was unsuccessful.
Located about 15 minutes from North Creek and the Gore Mountain downhill area, Garnet Hill Lodge has long been considered a major attraction in the region. In addition to 55 kilometers, or approximately 30 miles, of groomed trails, there is a restaurant and lodge with 16 rooms. There also are two separate buildings, or cottages, with four and five bedrooms each.
Preuninger, 52, was a longtime summer resident of the area who came to the North Country permanently after selling his interest in a New Jersey-based software firm. “I’ve been a summer person up here all my life,” he said.
He said he’s been busy this fall, as the sale was pending, clearing brush and other obstacles from the ski touring trails and hiring people to staff the restaurant and ski center. “We want to reach back to the roots of the place and we’re going to expand out in some new directions too, bringing things up to date and enhancing things,” he said.
Among the plans: building on the summertime use of trails for mountain biking as well as developing family and children-oriented activities year-round. Preuninger also wants to work with a new ski train operated by Saratoga and North Creek Railway, a subsidiary of Chicago-based Iowa Pacific Holdings, which is bringing visitors by rail to North Creek, located just below Gore Mountain.
