The Catherine Valley Trail runs from Watkins Glen to Millport. But there are plans for more.
The President of Friends of the Catherine Valley Trail says she expects a portion just south of the Millport Post Office to be open within a few days. She says she has commitment from the Parks Service to extend the trail all the way to the Elmira College domes. The eventual goal though, is to get to Horseheads.
“We’ve had an open town meeting in Horseheads to get input and look at some designs,” said Bridget Searles, President of the Friends of the Catherine Valley Trail. “But again lots of different groups to work through there and more funding needed to bring it all the way down there.”
Searles says the portion down to Pine Valley will be finished soon when the State Parks Department has time. So far the State and Transportation Council have put $3.7 million into the project and are committed to extending the trail to the Elmira College Domes. Many are hoping for more money to get the trail to Horseheads.
“I know it’s gonna go all the way to Horseheads and I wish it would hurry up and get there because I would love to ride it,” said Kathy Chapman, who was riding her bike on the trail.
The Catherine Valley Trail is mapped & described in the guidebook “Take Your Bike – Family Rides in New York’s Finger Lakes Region.”
